Each spring, our whitewater training school offers a comprehensive course, which aims to teach applicants how to become outstanding leaders on the river. 

This course also offers an incredible opportunity to develop leadership skills, challenge yourself in a beautiful setting and, most of all, have fun with like-minded, passionate people!

2021 course

June 11-20, 2021: 9-day intensive training (plus one rest day)

Important: All candidates who pass the guide exam and are hired to guide for New Wave Expeditions will be reimbursed for a large part of the course. Certain conditions apply. Completing the course does not guarantee that a candidate will be hired.

What's included?

Theoretical portion

  • Responsibility / Attitude / Leadership / Teamwork
  • Legal aspect of guiding
  • Getting to know and using equipment
  • Run protocol / Speeches / Preparing participants
  • Security / River hazards and traps
  • Challenges of being a river guide

Practical portion

  • Basic paddling strokes to steer an inflatable raft
  • Reading the river
  • Self-rescue and swiftwater swimming techniques
  • Navigating tactics and strategies / Recognizing river hazards
  • Rescue techniques and recovery methods
  • Signals and communication
  • Learning the lines through the Tewkesbury section of the Jacques-Cartier river
  • Entertaining participants on the river

What’s included

  • Wetsuit

  • Helmet, life jacket, paddle, and water-tight bag

  • Access to our facilities (showers, changing rooms

What you will need to bring

  • Warm clothes to wear in the water (avoid cotton), change of clothes

  • Snacks and a water bottle

  • Packed lunch to bring on the river

  • Bathing suit and towel

  • Sunscreen

  • Don’t forget to fill out the participation agreement.

  • 1 serrated knife, attached to your PFD

  • tubular webbing, 5 m long and 2,5 cm wide

  • 3 6-millimetre prusik loops, approximately 1,5m

  • 3 locking carabiners

  • 1 throw bag

  • 1 prusik minding pulley

  • 1 personal flotation device (if you have one)

  • 1 helmet
